Feather thy nest

I am having a ball getting the nursery together! The rest of the house doesn't really hold my attention, but Finn's room has been fun. So I have been painting and decorating away! The room was already painted deep aqua, so I have been using leftover paint to make it exciting.
I painted these trees on the wall , and we'll put the crib in between.

I am pretty excited for it to come together! Just need our crib, (its a convertible one, years of use!) and the sheets.

Thank you Aunt Lisa, I love the horsie art!

We've got a blue green white theme going. So Ive been adding some color here and there.

Thanks to Dena for the adorable clothes and personalized blankie and pillow! Hes gonna be a stylin dude!

Aaaaaaand We're Back!

Hello All!

Alex and returned last week from an amazing three weeks traveling through Ireland and Spain. It was a great trip for so many reasons. We shared it with family most of all, with Rosemary in Dublin, Annie and Helen Geoghegan joined us in Spain to visit and travel with Sara and her friend Fran-Tastic, and then back to the West of Ireland to spend more than a week in its beautiful ruggedness with great old friends and family!

The days in Dublin were very interesting, with trips to Dublin City and the Guinness brewery, out to Howth, and down to Killarney for some horseback riding.

Our time in Spain was also great! Barcelona held some amazing experiences for us as well. Foremost amongst these was the Sagrada Familia, the amazing creation of Antoni Gaudi. The best way to describe it from the outside is a gigantic drip sand castle. A surreal and awesome sight to behold. The combination of organic forms and massive structural designs was very beautiful and impressive in so many ways. The interior did not disappoint either, with the amazing open spaces held up by more tree-inspired columns of concrete, steel and stone. The small details and artful forms designed and refined by Gaudi himself were everywhere, and you could really feel his presence in the building, even as it is still being built 85 years after his death.

From there we drove a couple of hours north up the coast to an area known as the Cap de Creus, and a small seaside town of Cadeques. As typical and idyllic a Mediterranean Spanish town you would not be able to find! Stacks of white and blue houses, with red tile roofs, and almost all clad in one way or another with layers of the local stone. Crystal clear water filling the bay, and clear sunny days. Amazing!

Upon our departure from Spain, and the return to Ireland, we drove across the country to the West, and Annie's beautiful home Siochain in Clifden. It had been four years since we had been there to visit, and it was as beautiful and peaceful as always. It is a great place to spend time, relax, and take in the natural beauty of this part of the country. We took several day trips around the area, visiting familiar spots from years past, and finding new and beautiful ones to remember for next time. From crab claws and Guinness at O'Dowds in Roundstone, shell searching on Omey, a climb up Diamond Hill, and great nights at home and in town with great friends and family!

Alex and I, after spending a great week full of the above experiences, and many more, made our way South for a couple of days in the Burren. This area of Ireland holds some of the most dramatic and beautiful scenery there, and in the world. Vast areas of exposed limestone from an ancient Carboniferous sea that once lay between North America and Europe have been sculpted by rain and wind over the millenia after their protective coating of Ice Age ice sheet debris following deforestation by some of the first inhabitants of the island. Cracks, peaks, valleys, of limestone are contrasted with small patches of vegetation, and everywhere long lines of stone walls dividing the landscape into a patchwork of rectangular shapes. And scattered throughout the whole area are the marks of a long history of human habitation. Portal and wedge tombs are present by the dozens, some obvious and well marked, others hidden by the terrain and time. But all mysterious and wonderful to see in person.

A night in Doolin and some good Craic at McGann's got us ready for the next day which had as it's centerpiece the magnificent Cliffs of Moher. If you have ever seen The Princess Bride, then you have seen them as the Cliffs of Insanity! Massive layers of slate, shale, sandstone, and limestone laid down over 200 million years ago are now being slowly carved back by the sea, creating a constantly evolving vista.

Down through Lahinch, another beautiful seaside town, and then down to Bunratty and a nice night of pints at the original Durty Nelly's pub - serving beer and grub from 1620! The next day we set out early for our trip home, and almost 24 hours later, we were home safe in our bed again, and re-united with our girl Molly!

And through it all, Finn was a great little boy! He grew up a lot over those weeks, and really made his presence known with many kicks, punches and rolling all around! Alex is feeling great, and is being such a great mama already. She's been working hard on the nursery, painting and decorating the first space Finn will know as his own.

She and I are both hard at work getting back into Crossfit after our time away, and it is good to be back! I am getting ready to start the garden for the year now, with cold weather seeds like spinach, kale, carrots, and cabbage going in this weekend, and the seed starter getting fired up next week with tomatoes. We are ready for spring to get going here too - it has been colder and snowier than anyone can remember this year, and some warm sunshine is much missed!

More to come soon, so stay tuned!

Off across the sea!

So its time to stretch our wings outside of US borders again! We haven't been on an international trip since our wedding and honeymoon. On Wednesday we are off to Ireland and Spain for 3 weeks! We are going to fly into Dublin first and visit with my mom. Then onto Barcelona for a week to hang out with Eric's little sis Sara who is studying there. From there, back to west of Ireland to stay with Eric's mom at her place in Clifden- gorgeous place!

So Finn will get a chance to take a big pre-birth trip and it will be pretty nice for us too! Hes been kicking more and more. Its pretty cool and totally weird!

Also, I just ordered this little thing called a lullabelly- its a belly band that holds your ipod and plays music to the baby through a little speaker. Introduced him to some G and R! And classical music too.

Check back for pics from Ireland and Spain! A, E, and F.

Baby stuff madness?!

So I have started asking friends lately what I will need for Mr. Finn. The con cesnsus is generally that you don't need nearly what you think you will, the baby industry is a big rip-off, and don't get sucked in! I think its a little too late, I have gotten a bit excited about all the shiny and spin-y options. Anyway, I thought I would share some MUST HAVES that have been suggested, and see what you all think! Must we have them??

For the nursery:

The Badger Basket Sleigh Style Changing Table

Graco imonitor Baby Video Monitor. Supposed to be all 21 century and pretty cool!

And a handy dandy Arm's Reach Cosleeper for the first months. Eric is building the crib isn't that cool?? So crafty that boy. Like Yoda talk do I.

A bag is important for diapers and junk, and it will be the new purse. So it can be pretty! Petunia Pickle Bottom Rhone Blooms Boxy Backpack.
A little later the kid will need to eat some solid foods. I love this high chair we got for Mihr and Sylas, she says its working out quite nicely:

The Svan Wooden High Chair in Mahogony.

And we need to move the lil worm around:
A gnarly stroller, this is the BOB Revolution Jogging Stroller. Since I am a runner and woudl like to start with the kid right away, I will need one of these:The BOB Infant Car Seat Adapter. And into it must go:

The Graco Snugride Infant Car Seat.

So that's the "transportation system" I guess. So far so good? Also recommend are carrying devices of varying types such as:

Deuter Kid Comfort II Baby or Child Back and the Ergo Carrier

That's just the beginning, there's also play mats, blankets, bottles, breast feeding stuff, swaddly things, health supplies, and toys. Oh and clothes that the lil monkey will grow out of every day! Wow this is going to be fun!

20 weeks and pictures!

Well, we had an awesome morning here in Colorado! We went in for the 20 week ultrasound, and it was amazing! Finn has gotten so much bigger, and everything still looks perfect with him!

This ultrasound was also diagnostic, as the nurse took measurements of various body parts to ascertain his current weight, and whether he was developing normally. She also checked out all of his organs, including his perfect 4 chambered heart, still beating at 150 bpm, he stomach, kidneys and even his big old brain!

The really amazing part though was the 3D feature on this utrasound machine! He cooperated with us and was lying on his back with his face up, so we got a great look at him sucking his thumb, taking a nap, yawning, and generally looking amazingly cute and beautiful!

Check them out here: http://picasaweb.google.com/flywaldo/TheWeaselAkaFinnWalden#

There is a movie too, but I'll have to post that one later.

All in all, an amazing thing to witness, and confirmation that Alex and I are so lucky and blessed to have this opportunity to bring such an amazing life into the world and be responsible for making him a man! See you soon buddy, it is going to be GREAT!

2009- the year in review!

What a year what a year! 2009 brought tons of fun for the Waldens, as usual!
We started out with some snow action, snowboarding all over Colorado, snow-shoeing, and generally loving the outdoors.

In March I made a trip to Cancun for a classic Mexico bachelorette party for Julie's last days as a single lady- wow, that was probably all I need of that place for a lifetime!

April brought Crossfit Qualifiers for Eric in Virginia.- he was amazing- and inspired me to start my Crossfit journey!

We spent the rest of the time back East going to my 10 yr HS reunion and Julie and Clint's wedding in Charleston, SC.

Summer was epic! Our annual trip to Telluride, camping, lots of horse time for Alex, (She spent her days preparing for her certification as therapeutic riding instructor) and our week on the Green river, Desolation Canyon, Utah!

Another trip back to VA (yes we love that place!), visiting with family, the Outer Banks, and Eric's 35th in NYC rounded out the fall

Oh yes and it was on that trip was that we discovered this little development:

Lets see, winter was holiday-tastic, and far from over! Halloween here with Eric, early Thanksgiving in VA, and Christmas with the wonderful Daumlers in Colorado.

Well Happy New Year to you all- We know it will be an exciting one for this family, and we'll try our best to share it all as it comes!
xoxo, Eric, Alex, Molly, and Finn-Weasel
